A Final Update

Dear Investors and Villagers,

We wanted to take a moment to update you all on the progress that the Community Benefit Society has made following our last update. As you know we commissioned a survey and received back the results which alerted us to the very poor condition of the structure of the building. Subsequent discussions have been had with Sidleys (Ewelme Trusts management company), and we requested to attend the next Ewelme Trust meeting in the village. Unfortunately, this request was not granted, and the meeting progressed in our absence at the beginning of June.

Subsequent communications from Ewelme via Sidleys have unfortunately left us no further forward in terms of addressing who is responsible for ensuring that the structure of the building is safe and fit for purpose; is it the current tenant, Ewelme or in fact Sidleys, and who, therefore, is responsible for the cost of the necessary repairs? We now have two documents and countless photographs documenting the seriousness of the disrepair that the Greyhound has fallen in to.

This leaves the CBS with no option but to fall back on our very original guiding principle that we would never sign off on investing the hard-earned cash which you have entrusted to us to resurrect The Greyhound ‘At Any Cost’.

So, it is with a heavy heart and not a small amount of frustration that we have been left with no option but to call time on our venture. Believe us when we say that we have tried in vain every route possible to find a suitable resolution that reduced the CBS’s (and therefore your) risk to as little as possible but have failed. We as a group can only apologise and fall back on ‘we gave it a bloody good go!’.

So, we will now wind up the CBS and return all your investments over the next 2 weeks, please bear with us as this is a manual process and there is a significant number of transactions to get through, we will work as fast as we can. Before we do that, we want to take a moment to publicly say a few words.

Firstly, a huge thank you to you all for the last two years, the words of encouragement, the shouts of good luck, the thirst to find out ‘what’s happening with the pub’, the challenging questioning at our updates and your ability to keep us focused has been invaluable. But most of all thank you for your belief in us as a group of villagers as we sought a common goal.

We also want to take a moment to wish Ed and Chris and the team at the Plough all the very best with their venture and we wish them all the success that we know a pub in the centre of our great village will bring. If the last 4-5 weeks transformation is anything to go by, we WILL be getting a pub we can truly be proud of again.

And finally, from the CBS Management Committee James Dodd, Jerry Taylor, Chris Colclough, Richard Cross and David Ellis we would also like to thank the wider Steering Committee for the late nights, their unbiased views and at time robust discussions. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with Will Lambourne, Jane Berry, Paul Symonds, Darren Bell and Lesley Taylor.
